Maxie's is a pretty unique place. It does seem to change ownership and management a lot, but they keep hanging in there.
What makes this place unique?
It has actually two parts to the bar. On one side there is a dance floor with DJ, fully run bar and the kitchen is also located on this side, but cooks for both sides.
On the other half of the bar which is divided by a wall with a few doors leading from one side to the other is the karaoke bar. On this side there is a stage, dance floor, DJ, fully run bar, and one pool table in the back portion.
During the summer there is actually a third full bar with dance floor and DJ out on the back deck. It's pretty cool. This is where a majority of the dancers hang out during the summer. They also have a guy out there on a big grill serving up burgers and brats all night.
During the winter months, they have karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights. Right now during the summer they have it Wed, Through Sunday.
On Sunday nights they have a totally free comedy show with some great touring comedians. I don't ever miss a Sunday comedy show unless I'm out of town.
It's a pretty cool place and I've met a lot of my friends there.
The Friday and Saturday karaoke used to be hosted by Jeremy Fenech from Car's 108. He has been there for years. They have different people all the time doing the karaoke on the other nights. Some I've liked and some that I haven't.
Sadly though: as of a couple weeks ago, Jeremy is no longer there. I don't know what the Management was thinking. They really fucked up in my opinion.
Now they have Andre there on Friday and Saturdays who used to be on the Wed, Thurs, Karaoke. Although I didn't like him at all at first, he has gotten much better and I think he is pretty cool and doing a good job with the karaoke.
On Sunday nights, they have the karaoke on the same stage as the comedian in the other half of the bar. They just started having the karaoke following the comedians a few weeks ago. I've been saying that they should do that for a year now. What were they thinking? They had a bar full of people that would leave right after the comedy show and go to another bar, or another karaoke bar to sing. They had all those people there and didn't take advantage of it. Well they have finally come to realize the missed opportunity.
Some nights at the karaoke side are busier than others. It depends on how many parties are going on there. People have parties there all the time for birthdays, Bachelor and bachelorette, anniversaries and any other reason people can think of to have a party. It's fun to watch the wasted people get up and sing a little karaoke.
The rotation for karaoke varies from night to night. I would say on average that It's moderate. Some nights there are a lot of singers there and on others very few.
The kitchen has a decent menu. I get the chicken tenders all the time which are ok and the salads are good as well. I like the blackened chicken salad. The cheese sticks are typical restaurant variety. The burgers are typical of what you would expect to find but good. They also have pizza, fish, chicken sandwiches, I have a couple of friends that cook there and one of them told me that they have been given the freedom to create their own dishes there. He told me this while he was sitting there eating a huge plate of nachos. He informed me that they are making their own tortilla chips for the nachos from scratch. I tried them and they are awesome.
The wait staff and bartenders as with any establishment has it good ones and bad ones. Of course I have a few of my favorites that treat me really well. The waitresses are not bad to look at either. If you get a bad one while you're there: I'm sorry. You will probably wait awhile to get your drinks and food. It might take a month or so, but they will get rid of the bad ones and get new.
Definitely worth checking out. You will have a good time. If you like comedy and need to get some comic relief after a hard week, then coming out on Sunday is a must. You cant beat free!!! what are you waiting for. If you do plan on going, make sure to call to reserve a table for the comedy.
